POLICE are appealing for motorists to be "patient and understanding" when the carnival parade hits the streets of Prestwich on Sunday.

They warn that a replacement Metrolink bus service - drafted in while repairs take place on the Moss Lane bridge, Whitefield, and Hollinhurst bridge, Radcliffe - will be hit on the day as roads are expected to be jammed.

However, Metrolink bosses deny there will be any problems.

Mounted and motorcycle police officers will be out in force and will close main roads if necessary.

Barring last minute alterations, the parade leaves from Rectory Lane at noon. The circular route takes in Heys Road, Heywood Road, Bury Old Road, Nursery Road and Poppythorn Lane before heading down Bury New Road to arrive at St Mary's Park at approximately 2pm. Police are warning that replacement bus services will be unable to get near Prestwich or Heaton Park stations while the parade passes these areas.

Inspector David Jones of Prestwich Township said: "There will be ample advance warning from signs and officers giving advice on alternative routes.

"We ask that people are patient as it will only take about 20 minutes for the parade to pass any one point."

He added: "The safety of all road users, both drivers and people in the parade, is our first priority. We have been in contact with the emergency services and public transport so everybody knows what's happening and nobody will be surprised.

"We are trying to make sure that everything goes like clockwork."

A spokesman for Metrolink said their service would not be affected even though the buses are required to call at both stations.
