IT was certainly a case of it will be all right on the night for two youngsters who have reached the final of a national comedy competition.

Richard Evans and Jennie McAlpine, both aged 15, had judges splitting their sides when they showed off their comic talents at the Manchester Masterclass heat of the Fanta Comedy Awards.

Jennie and Richard impressed judges, including Bolton comedian Peter Kay, at the Manchester heat to win a place in the London final.

"Peter Kay was great," said Jennie. "He talked about his own experiences and gave us advice about how to get on in the business."

This is the second time around for Jennie, of Home Avenue, Bury, who reached the final last year.

"To get a second chance is brilliant," said Jennie. "Going through it before did help with the nerves but it was still tough." Jennie, a pupil at St Gabriel's's RC High School, wrote and performed her stand-up routine.

"I based my routine on general life observations and, in particular, my dad and the funny and embarrassing things dads do," said Jennie.

Richard, of Tor Hey Mews, Greenmount, also wrote his material for his surrealist routine.

"I just look at everyday objects and then use them as the focus point for my routine," said Richard, a Woodhey High School pupil.

"I tend to go for the bizarre and surreal, and on this occasion I based the routine around my pencil case."

The talented pair are now working on new material for the London final next month, which will be hosted by Jonathan Ross.

They will be competing against ten other young comedians for a chance to perform at this year's Edinburgh Festival.

Jennie said: "I am really looking forward to it. It is a great opportunity and experience for me. I love doing stand-up and I am determined to pursue it as a career.

"The competition allows youngsters the chance to show off their talents and gives us a great opportunity."

Richard said: "It will be nerve-racking but a great experience. I will not be that disappointed if I don't win but I am delighted to have got this far."
