ARCHEOLOGISTS want tight controls during work on an historic Astley hall.

They are insisting on close monitoring to safeguard Dam House which is at the centre of an exciting £1m-plus scheme to convert the old manor house in to a community haven.

As part of plans to renovate the Grade 11 listed building and open the former hospital administration block to the community, Morts Astley Heritage Trust needs to demolish a boiler house.

Planners have given approval to the demolition, subject to permission by the Secretary of State, and removal of the boilers.

They have already given the go-ahead for the conversion of the Grade 11 listed building for a variety of community uses.

But, before demolition and removal of the boilers to the care of the Red Rose Stream Society at Astley Green Colliery museum, experts want everything placing on record.

Planning officers, English Heritage and Greater Manchester Archaeological Unit will monitor the work.
