A HINDLEY trio's gallant attempt to pedal the length of Britain had to be called off.

Terrible weather and gruelling terrain took their toll on David, Chris and Marc Johnsons' attempt to ride from John O'Groats to Land's End in aid of the NSPCC Full Stop charity.

Brave young brothers Marc, 9, Chris, 12 and dad, David, from Bridgewater Street, were forced to call off the ride at Inverness.

Lashing rain and hail storms didn't help their efforts and young Marc was exhausted by the time the weather-beaten cyclists reached Golspie - 75 miles from the start.

Worried mum Julie was relieved when husband Dave decided to call off the attempt.

She told The Journal: "It just got to a point where Dave said 'enough is enough'. It was the weather and the difficult gradients.

"Dave says he might try again some time in the future but I think I would be reluctant to let the boys join him.

"I was worried sick. I'm just glad they got home safely."

"The boys slept most of the time during their journey home from Scotland. We're grateful to Enterprise Rent A Van for supplying the vehicle."
