GREATER Manchester police's new campaign to keep the 999 emergency lines clear for people who really do need the police urgently has generated much debate about what is, and what isn't, a real police emergency.

To the police, a real emergency is where there is an immediate threat to life or property. In such an emergency you should always call 999. At all other times you should consider calling the non-emergency number which is 0161 872 5050, or use a direct dial number if you have been given one.

But the police don't mind if you ring 999 when you think it is real emergency and it turns out not to be. After all, it is better to be safe than sorry.

A leaflet giving more information is available from police stations and other public buildings.
