CULCHETH residents have put their money where their mouths are in a bid to halt plans for Kenyon Station.

At a public meeting in the village this week they overwhelmingly opposed the scheme, with some pledging sums of upto £100 each towards a legal fund to fight the proposals at a public inquiry.

Chris Maile, who chaired the meeting on behalf of the No Xanadu Campaign, said: "This is not about a station to serve the local community, but simply a planning bribe by a desperate developer who will not see their multi-million pound project approved without public transport being directly linked to the project.

"To achieve that they are more than happy to see your local green belt destroyed, as long as they are making money."

An action group was formed which is now seeking legal advice on the best course of action in presenting their case.

Further public meetings are planned along with a newsletter.

Campaigners are also urging the public to write letters of objection to Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott who has responsibilty for Transport and the Regions and to contribute to the fighting fund.
