LOCAL naturalists may be interested in the recent discovery of a very rare species down at the Burrs Country Park in Bury.

Mostly white, with yellow stripes and black markings, it is most easily spotted between 4am and 6am on a Saturday, when its loud and piercing groans echo around the valley, silencing the drawn chorus and driving bleary-eyed ducks and geese from their nests.

I refer, of course, to the nocturnal Bury MBC roadsweeper, which beeps as it sweeps as it cleans, its bright yellow light pulsating in time with a penetrating alarm whenever it grinds itself into reverse.

I'm sure that local residents would be delighted to help any interested councillors, or members of the noise abatement society, to see the beast for themselves. For myself, any ideas on how to catch and silence the thing - short of strangling the driver - would be very welcome
