LEIGH's Euro-MP Terry Wynn has fought his way back to the European Parliament.

But Sunday night was a bad night for Labour in the North West after the Conservatives swept away half of Labour's 10 seats in the region.

As Labour failed miserably, in a record low turn out for a national election, the Tories cashed in to overtake Labour as the biggest British party in the Strasbourg Parliament.

The party polled 35pc of the North-west vote to Labour's 34pc.

Mr Wynn was re-elected along with Labour's Greater Manchester West MEP Gary Titley who declared the results to be "irrelevant".

And he called the Tory Euro election campaign "dishonest" for concentrating on the Single European currency.

He said: "It has no relevance whatsoever for a General Election."

Terry Wynn said the turnout was disappointing. The Leigh Constituency had the highest figure the Wigan area - 15%. In Wigan it was 14.9% and Makerfield 13.1%

"The turnout does nothing for democracy. But the trend has been there for a while with low turn-outs in local and European Elections," said Mr Wynn.

He blamed the turnout on lack of information on European issues and the Tories 'stealing the agenda' over the Single Currency.

"But this election wasn't an endorsement for the Pound or a condemnation of the Euro," added Mr Wynn.
