I would like to ask parents in the Preston area to do what they can to discourage their children from playing in local quarries through the coming summer holidays.
Each year youngsters are needlessly injured and, on occasions, lives have been tragically lost.
The reality is that the quarry lakes which look so inviting for swimming can often be deep and very cold, with lethal hidden currents.
Heaps of sand may look like fun places to play, but can easily collapse.
Steep rock faces, falling rocks and heavy machinery are other potential hazards of an environment which provides essential materials for society but which is very much for work and not play.
It is for that reason that we are now launching our Play Safe-Stay Safe Educational campaign, targeted at schools across the country.
