PRESTON cabbies want to give out condoms to couples getting a lift home after a night out.

A safe sex initiative in Liverpool, which involved local taxi drivers handing out free condoms to couples who used their taxis, has been hailed a success by local health organisations.

Now Preston's drivers want to give the scheme a trial run.

Preston's Hackney Carriage Drivers Association say they would like to do their bit to promote safer sex in the town.

Sandra Chesters, association secretary, said: "It is an idea we would like to adopt in this area and we are looking at ways of introducing it.

"I have five lads of my own so, from a personal point of view, it would be nice to think of people looking out for one of my sons."

She added: "The older drivers are a bit more wary of the idea, possibly because they may be embarrassed, but the younger drivers are really positive.

"A small sign in the cab, telling people there are some condoms on board would probably suffice."

The Liverpool initiative was piloted by Healthwise, an organisation which promotes good health.

A spokesman said: "It is great to see other areas are considering adopting the proposals.

"A good night our can lead to romance and such campaigns can only help to promote safer sex."

Cabbie Steven Fowler said: "I work nights and I think it is a very good idea." John Williams added: "A lot of people 'pull' and then use a cab to get home, especially young girls, so this idea is a good one. I would have no problem handing them out."

Driver John Boyers, who shares his cab with his son, added: "It wouldn't bother me in the slightest. If we can help, then it is only a good thing."

But Tony Mullett, of the Clean Up Preston Campaign, said: "This is treating people like animals and promoting promiscuity, something we staunchly oppose."
