PREVIOUS MPs or councillors cannot put 'MP' or 'Cllr' on the ballot paper, but several of the Labour Euro candidates put 'MEP' after their names.

This cannot be an EU directive as there were also Pro Euro Conservatives who would qualify.

Either this is illegal or Mr Blair has manipulated the rules. Either way it is cheating.

EDMUND CRITCHLEY, Merlin Road, Blackburn.

FOOTNOTE: The returning officer for the North West constituency of the European elections assures us that the previously sitting MEPs were perfectly within the law to include that suffix.
