REFERRING to MR Alman's letter (Citizen, June 3) headed Euro Referendum Promise, unfortunately the Labour Government is doing what the Conservatives did to the electorate.

They are not listening to us on what we want for Europe or any other concerns, like GM food.

Joining the EEC was a costly mistake and still is.

Its costs are soaring while our consumers pay through inflated prices.

Other EEC countries' industries are subsidised and reap more benefits than ours.

I'm all for trading with Europe, but on a level playing field.

Many of the EEC countries' lifestyles and standards are different to ours but to prop up these economies to the detriment of our sick, disabled, elderly and poor is economic suicide.

You only have to look at some of the things our money is being spent on.

Like crazy laws that only a juggernaut of the EEC could think up - they are laughable and pathetic.

A child could have done better.

Once we have joined the single currency, for this is what will happen with Mr Blair at the helm, we will in part lose our identity as a nation and other changes will happen as the EEC bites deeper into the uniqueness of the British culture.

If you want to know what public opinion is saying, listen to the main opposition party.

At this moment they are promising to fight monetary union.

The Conservatives know what the British feel about losing the pound and most probably have done a random survey to test opinion.

The only trouble I find with MPs of all persuasions is that you can never get a straightforward answer to a direct question.

More often than not they end up talking about something different - but that's politics.

As Mr Alman has suggested, please write to your MP whether you agree or not.

Your letter counts more than you think, so let's get Labour to keep the referendum promise.
