BIKE lessons began this week as part of a big campaign to make cycling safer for young riders.

The Council's Road Safety Unit aims to teach children the right way to ride and cut the accident risk.

Road Safety officer Darren Barton said: "Young cyclists are more likely to be involved in accidents because of their lack of the knowledge, experience and necessary skills to use the roads safely.

"They have not had sufficient opportunity to develop these."

Tutors aim to help children understand why and how they are vulnerable. They will also learn the need for good communication between road users and appreciate the need for good bike maintenance, a cycle helmet and high visibility clothing.

Mr Barton added: "All schools have been approached and a Safer Cycling Course Workbook is now available to all year six children.

"We are grateful to Waterfields, DeRoma, Barr Soft Drinks and Heinz for generous sponsorship which helped fund this publication."

Children who have completed the workbook, received a Cyclist's Workbook Certificate and have a roadworthy bike, can go forward to on-road training.

When they have developed their skills and successfully shown awareness to traffic dangers they will receive a certificate.

Safer Cycling Courses will be held throughout the school summer holidays. More details from 01942 828449.
