FLEETWOOD port is being targeted for improved transport links by Central and West Lancashire Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The chamber approved the proposed link between the M55 and Fleetwood as well as a link between the M6 and Heysham.
The consultations are part of the process both Blackpool Borough Council and Lancashire County Council are undertaking prior to producing local plans that will influence transport development well into the Millennium.
Babs Murphy, chief executive of the chamber, said: "Efficient and reliable transport links to the two major ports at Fleetwood and Heysham as well as Blackpool Airport are essential for a competitive local economy.
"However, we are concerned that traffic congestion in the Lancaster and Fleetwood areas in particular are having detrimental effects on both ports.
"We are recommending that both Lancashire County Council and Blackpool Borough Council include in their local transport plans specific requirements to improve the existing road network to both ports."
Also in the recommendations, the chamber identifies the importance of the Fylde Coast tramway.
It suggests the local transport plan recognises a commitment to extending the route to Lytham and St Annes with an extension to Blackpool Airport.
