HOW are the majority of Redvales people earning their cash?

A new council survey of residents in the Cecil Street area reveals that less than half of them are either in work or on the dole.

The mystery intrigued Tory councillor Dorothy Gunther who wondered why the household poll had no information on what the other 52.7 per cent of residents did.

Coun Gunther raised the matter at Tuesday's (June 15) first meeting of a scrutiny and review panel which looks at housing, social services, and health issues.

The figures came out of a survey which is part of the council's Excellence for Elders project, which aims to improve the quality of life for residents in the Cecil Street area.

Mr Jim Wilson, chief social services officer, said that there could be several reasons why people did not fall into one of the three categories listed - full-time working, part-time or self-employed, and unemployed.

As the survey was aimed at the over-50s, he presumed that many of them were retired.

He assured Coun Gunther that he would look into the figures in time for the next meeting.
