I WOULD like to make a point regarding the tragedy of the seven-year-old Blackburn boy who drowned in the Leeds-Liverpool canal (LET, June 9).

How long will it be before the government recognises the need to put swimming lessons back in the school curriculum. This is quite obviously a life-saving exercise.

We, as children, always attended the swimming baths once a week. On the way back in the school bus, we had a spelling test.

The whole day was worthwhile. I feel that parents would pay for this for the safety of the children.

Money is spent on speed ramps which does saves lives, I admit, but it isn't educational. They sometimes then dig the ramps up again. What is the point of this.

Come on, MPs, get your priorities right before more young lives are lost.
