A FARMER clipping hedges along a country lane discovered an unexploded bomb yesterday afternoon.

Harold Lloyd, of Higher House Farm, Paythorne, found the device on the A682 Gisburn to Long Preston road shortly after 2pm.

He was removing vegetation from the roadside in a mechanical digger when he came across the shell sticking out of the ground.

Sergeant John Lindsey of Clitheroe police called the Army's bomb disposal unit from Liverpool.

He said: "During the war the area was used for military manoeuvres and there were ammunition dumps at various sites.

"The bomb disposal experts decided this particular device wasn't dangerous and it was safely removed."

He added that anyone coming across such devices should not touch them and contact the police immediately.
