OVER the bank holiday weekend, we witnessed bands performing in pubs, clubs, in the street and at the municipal hall. Whereabouts? Colne, of course.

Every year, this small Lancashire town hosts top-quality musical entertainment in most of its pubs where, year after year, there is no trouble and everyone has a great time.

How ironic, then, that just 15 miles down the M65 we have the same situation - in a pub with a band performing and being appreciated by a well-behaved crowd.

This time, however, the pub was shut down by the police for holding so-called 'illegal' entertainment (LET, August 30).

Whereabouts? Darwen, of course.

Isn't it reassuring to know that the authorities have got their priorities right and are doing such a good job?
