NORTH West Conservatives have rejected government proposals for elected mayors.
Tories from the region met yesterday in Blackburn to discuss Labour plans to restructure local government.
About 30 members heard Bolton Councillor John Walsh, deputy chairman of the North West area, condemn John Prescott's plans for elected mayors.
At St Mark's Conservative Club, Preston Old Road, Coun Walsh said: "Many people recognise the impartiality and integrity of the historic role of mayor as a non-political figure.
"We think that would be lost and we are campaigning against it."
The meeting also voted unanimously against the introduction of a North West Assembly, a new, elected tier of local government similar to the Welsh and Scottish Assemblies.
Coun Walsh said: "It is totally unnecessary. We are already over-governed and we don't need another layer."
