THE last baptism of the old millennium in Britain took place in East Lancashire.

Four-month-old Rebecca Holly Pratt was christened in an outdoor service St James Church in Lower Darwen as the seconds ticked towards the year 2000.

And, to make the occasion extra special, the tiny tot was surrounded by hundreds of lighted candles.

The baptism was also part of a special inter-church service which involved members of local Catholic, Methodist and United Reformed churches.

Proud parents Andrew and Melanie were thrilled to be invited to the one-off service.

Andrew, 33, said: "The christening was arranged through one of our relatives and we were delighted Rebecca was baptised on such a special day.

"Our baby has made history which is absolutely fantastic."

Canon Dick Cartmell said: "This was most probably the last baptism of the century which will make it even more special for the family.

"The communion was also unique as we were sharing it with churches of other faiths."
