LEE McCash has received an invitation to run cross country for the Great Britain Under 20 team in Portugal on January 22. His latest honour follows his fine second place when running for England Under 20s in the Belgian Cross Cup in November. Meanwhile, the young Pendle star looks set to miss this weekend's Lancashire Championships.

Anne Smith, of Park High School, recorded victories in both rounds of the West Craven Christmas and Millennium runs. At the first at Salterforth, she was overall winner of the junior two-mile race, and on New Year's Eve, where there was no separate junior event, she was the first girl in the 1.25-mile race from the Rolls Royce Social Club in Brnoldswick. In both events Laura Finucane of Pendle AC was second girl with the Park High pair Louise Dickinson and Jennifer Tunstall third and fourth.

After remaining unbeaten in 1999 until December 30, Burnley athlete Aaron Hargreaves suffered defeat in this year's first event, the Joe Salt 5K at Littleborough on New Year's Day. Aaron, who runs for Trafford, recorded a fine time of 15.45, but had to settle for third behind Salford's Duncan Mason.

Several juniors had storming runs including Anthony Gotts (23rd), Lee Leishman (24th), Nicola Leishman (100th) and Peach Murphy (102nd), all from Rossendale Harriers and Sam Holden of Darwen Dashers who was 96th. The race raised £638 which will be divided between five charities.
