STUDENTS in a Blackburn school are thoroughly enjoying their learning partnership with our Newspapers in Education project and their daily delivery of our newspaper.

Witton Park High School's English department is using both our Super Story Search and Pick and Mix material this term. "We can hardly hold them back," said English teacher Jeanette Swain, speaking about her year eight class who are currently working their way through our Super Story Search resource.

"This is such a fun way to learn and really stimulates the reading habit. Even reluctant readers are carried along by the enthusiasm generated by the material.

"I would strongly recommend the project to any school," she added. "Although other teachers in our school have used the material in the past, this is the first time I have tried it and I am pleased with the reaction of pupils. They are so obviously enjoying the project and are learning a great deal about the writing and design of newspapers as well as relating to the content.

"The workbooks are keeping a momentum going and pupils are competing with each other to complete the tasks and earn the reading rewards, as well as working together. "The whole project fits in well with the requirements of the National Curriculum and is also helping to prepare students for our whole school Language Awareness Week in February."

Our NIE Pick and Mix literacy and numeracy resource is also in use at Witton Park and English teacher Christina Fry intends to dip into it to support Media work throughout the year.

Both sets of NIE material plus our Maths Motivation resource are available to schools and colleges only through our newspaper, at any time of year and are aimed at pupils in KS2 and KS3 or adult education projects.

Educational visits to find out more about newspaper production, or talks and newspaper linked activities in school are optional facilities available only to schools and colleges ordering our NIE material.

For more information or for a no-obligation viewing of NIE resources in your own school or college, teachers should contact NIE coordinator Rita Shaw, tel 01254 678678, ext 255, or fax no 01254 680429.
