A NEW bid to take cheap meals off the menu at County Hall has proved unpalatable.

A proposal by Pendle Liberal Democrat David Whipp and his Leyland colleague Tim Farron to abolish the subsidised meals for councillors was defeated by the ruling Labour administration, supported by the Tories, at a finance meeting.

Labour plans to spend £332,000 on the subsidy in the year from April, up from £325,000 this year.

A LibDem move to cut the £138,000 cost of entertaining County Hall visitors to £50,000 was also thrown out.

Coun Whipp said: "We think the public would rather see this money spent on services rather than perks and privileges for those at the County Hall Club."

But Conservative leader Coun Robert Hodge argued the county council had to provide hospitality and to cut the budget would diminish the standing of the authority.
