PENDLE's "Mr Co-op" Len Dole has been honoured for nearly 50 years' service to the co-operative movement.

Labour stalwart, Len, 82, of Lomeshaye Place, Nelson, who is stepping down as chairman of the Lancashire area of Co-operative Retail Services received a certificate at a presentation evening at Burnley Pioneer store.

The award was made by Bert Beaumont a director of Co-operative Wholesale Society which recently merged with CRS to form Britain's biggest co-op.

Mr Beaumont said Len, agent for former Nelson and Colne MP Sydney Silverman, had played a significant role in local politics and was a powerful advocate of the co-operative movement.

He had shown great loyalty to the Co-op and his unstinting efforts had made him respected throughout the movement, Mr Beaumont added.

A certificate was also presented to John Jones of the Manchester area for 48 years service and awards for nine years service to retiring board members Linda More of Leigh and former long-serving Pendle councillor Frank Hartley of Nelson (see picture).
