THE dream of a Millennium Centre dedicated to providing advice and support for local people has taken a step closer to reality.

For work has started on the site earmarked to house it - the former Rivoli Cinema in Corporation Street.

Officials of the Harry and Mavis Pilkington Memorial Campaign have been raising money for more than a year and work on Phase One, an NHS Primary Care Walk-In Centre due to open in August, 2001, is already on target.

This will be followed by Phase Two which aims to provide a one-stop resource centre for voluntary organisations in St Helens. These will provide advice, support, information and social activities for its visitors.

Reverend Christopher Byworth and Canon John Pennington recently took over from last year's mayor, Councillor Pat Jackson, as presidents of the appeal and chairman, Tony Richards, said: "It is nice to think that a site for so long a source of entertainment in the town, will soon have a new life in providing high-quality and easy-accessible services for the 21st century."

When completed, the purpose-built building will act as a celebration of the new Millennium and, with its links to the Pilkington family, will also commemorate more than 135 years of glassmaking in St Helens.
