I DID not expect my letter inviting Blackpool Labour Party to elect a new leader to trigger Ivan Taylor's resignation four days after it was published in The Citizen.

It was the correct decision and we understand the reasons for it. Now politics in Blackpool must enter a new phase for the year 2000.

All thoughts of a one-party cabinet must now end. George Bancroft supports electoral reform I understand.

I hope he allows all the members of Blackpool Labour Party to have a vote in electing their new leader.

Their new leader must understand how few people actually voted Labour in May. A wise leader would call a local referendum seeking opinion on the trial "cabinet" system. If members were appointed in proportion to the votes cast for the three parties it may receive public support.

The first policy reversal Liberal Democrats will demand is to throw out all planning applications for the green space on Warren Drive, Anchorsholme. We will not allow that final green space in North Blackpool to be destroyed like Leys Farm has been.
