BURY Cricket Club have been enjoying the delights of the Welsh countryside, not to mention the Welsh wickets and hospitality, this week.

Their annual tour took in matches against Bangor and Rydal Dolphins, while games against Conway and Bethesda were hit by the weather.

No play was possible in Monday's scheduled opener at Conway, but the tour party, which included several guest members, made up for it at Bangor the following day.

They set the hosts a target of 152 after Liam Willis hit a fine 61 not out, Steve Mobberley added 28 and 14-year-old Jonathan Shaw chipped in with 22.

It was a fine effort for the loss of seven wickets, but they were pipped by Bangor on the penultimate ball of the game.

Bangor's New Zealand professional took no prisoners, and despite suffering from a couple of painful "Brain Close-type" bruises, guest tourist Rick Purser managed a fine 52 in the following day's game at Rydal Dolphins.

His son William was equally effective with the bat, chasing Dad hard with a knock of 51. John Wiggans chipped in with 37 and Wayne Belston hit 27 as Bury reached 188 in their innings.

Despite all-rounder Wiggans collecting three wickets, the Bury total wasn't enough and the Dolphins coasted home with four wickets to spare.

Thursday's match at Bethesda was in the balance because of rain as the Bury Times went to press.
