A BID by Burnley Borough Council for European money targeted at regeneration projects has received the backing of Lancashire County Council.

Urban Two money is available to towns with social and environmental problems, which have strong local partnerships and promote EEC environmental policies an legislation.

County Councillor Frank McKenna, deputy leader of the county council, said: "Urban Two funding is available for areas which have high levels of long term unemployment, poverty and social exclusion but do not qualify for support under Objectives One and Two.

"I am delighted that Burnley have put forward an initial bid for Urban Two funding and will support their efforts in any way I can.

"The county council was very disappointed when areas of East Lancashire were omitted from the Objective Two map but Urban Two is a good alternative that could bring much needed grant aid into Burnley.

"The money can only be used for very distinctive projects.

"These are environmentally friendly schemes which also involve the creation of sustainable employment opportunities bringing benefits to the whole community."
