ENVIRONMENT-friendly Bury businesses have been briefed about how significant bottom line savings can be made from minimising waste and reducing energy costs.

At a seminar staged by Bury Business Environment Association (BEA), high profile speakers from industry gave an account of how they have implemented environmental management system ISO 14001.

These included Ray Booth from Pennine Vibropiling of Bacup, whose company has just been accredited to this standard, and also John Maynard from Darwen-based Wolstenholme International who were the first firm in the North West o achieve the accreditation in 1993.

At the seminar held at Bury FC, both speakers gave examples of major savings arising from having an environmental system in place to help squeeze waste out of their businesses.

Other speakers included Martin Beck from the Environmental Technology Best Practice Programme and Peter Chung from Groundwork Blackburn.

He described a 16-step technique to assist companies, particularly small enterprises, to achieve the standard with minimum effort and within a short timescale.

An open forum at the conclusion of the seminar allowed delegates to get involved in a question and answer session.
