BURY companies could win a Royal seal of approval for their export efforts and emulate the success of two local businesses.

They are being urged to apply for the coveted Queen's Award for Enterprise, the business equivalent of the Honours.

In 1998, Bury-based W.H.Tracey textile recyclers, which sends large quantities of second-hand clothing overseas, won the Queen's Award for Export Achievement.

And several years before, foil top lid manufacturers Chadwick's of Bury won a similar award.

A second category is for outstanding achievement in the field of innovation or international trade.

And for the first time, businesses will be able to apply under a new sustainable development category.

Applications for the Queen's Award for Enterprise 2001 must be made by October 31.

W.H. Tracey was delighted to win its award after doubling its overseas earnings in two years.

The business was started as a rag and bone concern in 1935 and now sends up to three 40ft containers of second-hand clothing and footwear to Africa and other areas every week.

For entry packs, contact 0990 134 486.

Third parties, such as suppliers or customers who wish to nominate an organisation for a Queen's Award for Enterprise can call the same number for further information.
