ANN Royle is to retire from her job as head teacher at Holy Soul's RC School after more than 20 years.

Ann, from Samlesbury, who has been head teacher for four years, paid tribute to staff and parents. "It's been delightful," she said, "Everyone has been very supportive. The children are superb. They're all little characters, every one of them."

Ann was a late entry into teaching, having started a family first. "After having a family I did my teacher training, then worked in Burnley for seven years, before coming to Blackburn," she said.

The most memorable moment, Ann recalls, was being appointed head teacher.

"I used to be deputy head, but the day they asked me to be head teacher was an honour," she said.

The school recently underwent major repair work, and Ann leaves the post as new buildings are due to be opened.

"I would like to extend my very sincere thanks to all the staff and parents over the years for all their support, " said Ann.

Ann, who has two children and four grandchildren, plans to spend more time with her family.
