FIREFIGHTERS have warned that large amounts of dumped rubbish are providing fuel for bored children.

Sub officer Jim Sheridan hopes to encourage people to dispose of their waste properly after the latest incident when a crew was called out to a rubbish fire near some dumped gas cylinders in Southfield Street, Nelson.

He said: "Piles of rubbish, pallets and old mattresses are continually being dumped outside.

"We have asked the council to remove it in the past but it is continuing to occur.

"If you get the rubbish taken away then there is nothing for the children to set alight. It's providing fuel for them.

"Six gas cylinders were also in the vicinity of the fire in Southfield Street -- fortunately they were not involved in the fire but the situation was potentially very dangerous."
