LANCASTER'S St Martin's College has won a £275,000 grant to help build links between business and higher education.

The college will use the money to set up a Business and Community Enterprise Unit with centres in Lancaster and Ambleside. Tony Doherty, formerly a senior lecturer in business and management studies, has been appointed as Director of the Unit. Tony said: "The new unit has a lot to offer businesses and not-for-profit organisations. It is my job to establish links between these and appropriate college departments or staff. At the same time, we will develop more activities that will be of value to employers, businesses and community groups. We want to learn from them understand how we can meet their needs."

The unit aims to promote the transfer of knowledge and expertise through a programme of research, consultancy and bespoke training courses. For details call Tony on 015394 30207
