YOUNG boffins from a Pendle high school proved they are the brains of Britain after picking up a national award.
The students from Fisher-More RC High School, Colne, won the Science Challenge 2000 contest after clinching a place in the finals at Leeds University.
The 16-strong team of Year 8 pupils also picked up a £200 voucher for science equipment, badges and certificates.
They caught the judges' eyes by tackling a study to show how current changes with increasing lengths of wire.
The final included an experiment, presentation and a science quiz. The competition was run by the Association of Science Education. "This was the first time we'd entered and everyone is very pleased that they came top," said Robin Nichol, head of science at the school.
The team was taught by Wendy Goulding who left the school at summer to teach at Habergham High School, Burnley. Team members were Katie Helps, Lizzy Standley, Jennifer Duffy, Emily Jackson, Emmott Garnett, Neil Kinmond, Shaunagh McGarvey, Andrea Dobson, Emily Adams, Emma Austin, Nick Spain, Anthony Clavier, Liam McCarthy, James Waller, Maria Walsh and Chloe McAuley.
