COUNCIL chiefs are to look at further Traffic calming measures in a "problem road" where a seven-year-old boy was badly injured in an accident with a car.

Callam Sylvester, of Church Street, Church, who was crossing the road in New Lane, Oswaldtwistle, was in collision with a Nissan Sunny driven by Parveen Hassan, 23, of Richmond Hill Road, Accrington, at around 7.50pm on Tuesday.

He was taken to Blackburn Royal Infirmary with a broken leg and collar bone and cuts to his head.

His grandma Rita Pilkington, of Margaret Street, Oswaldtwistle, which is just off New Lane, said: "He broke his leg in two places and also broke his collar bone.

"He has also got a big gash at the back of his head."

She added: "It is a terrible road and something needs to be done about it. I would like to see some traffic calming measures."

Callam, who lives with his mum Gwen and dad Fred and three-year-old brother Lewis at Church, is believed to have been crossing the road between parked cars to go to play on cricket fields when the accident happened. Although police said that it was not believed that speed was a cause of the accident, council leader Peter Britcliffe said that New Lane had a traffic problem which would be addressed.

He said: "There is a problem in New Lane and I know that Councillor Sandra Hayes, Councillor Jean Lockwood and Councillor Maureen Duffy are looking into it. As a resident there I feel like other residents in New Lane that traffic calming measures taken were a complete waste of time and money. Traffic calming in Hyndburn is under review because some schemes have gone over the top and some like in New Lane are a complete failure. The residents in New Lane are concerned about the volume of traffic and the speed of the traffic."

He added: "I would like to see the introduction of 20mph speed limits on some roads in Hyndburn."

Sergeant Stuart Isherwood, of Accrington Traffic Police, said that inquiries were on-going

He added: "New Lane is one of our target roads within Eastern Division because of its casualty record. It is flagged up for us to patrol and we will support any measures to assist us in reducing casualties.

"It is an on-going complaint which we are addressing and we will be happy to work with Hyndburn Council to find a solution."
