EIGHTEEN years ago, I lost my 14-month-old son Spencer through meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia.

Since then I have dedicated my life to create a better understanding of this terrible disease.

I have been involved in many awareness and fund-raising initiatives which include 10 marathon walks.

In October, I shall walk from Morpeth, Northumberland to Bristol and we hope to raise a minimum of £50,000, which will go towards new state-of-the-art laboratories at the University of Bristol to research into a vaccine for meningococcal group B meningitis.

On Saturday, October 7, I shall walk from Colne to Rochdale via Nelson, Burnley, Bacup and Whitworth, together with families who have been touched by this devastating disease.

If any readers can help, perhaps by joining in for a few miles, or just by helping to collect in their town or village which we pass through, I would be delighted to hear from them.
