ACTION is about to be taken to improve Accrington's congested bus station, council bosses have promised.

New bus stops are to be created away from the core line of stops in Peel Street to reduce congestion and confusion.

And council bosses are about to send out consultation forms to interested parties to find out what they think should be done to improve the bus station.

Council leader Peter Britcliffe said: "We should not kid ourselves that we have a bus station.

"We have a series of bus shelters which are in the wrong place and too close together at that.

"Our bus station is far too cramped, which is why we are spreading the bus shelters out."

New bus stops will be created in front of the market hall and on Abbey Street, which will hopefully reduce congestion on Peel Street.

Bus passengers have complained to bus companies and the council that the existing layout is confusing and provides little shelter from the elements.

Coun Britcliffe, speaking to last night's town centre regeneration committee, added: "We know the bus shelters provide little shelter, which is why we have paid for backs to be put on them so they do provide some comfort from the elements.

"This work should be completed in December, ahead of the worst weather of the year.

"It is a slow process, but we will get there and the consultation exercise will be a big help."

Coun Ian Ormerod added: "The bus station was created when we thought the market hall development would include a glass pavilion facing on to it which would have made it an excellent location.

"That has not happened and yes, in its current state, it is a nightmare."
