BOSSES at Blackpool Pleasure Beach remain tight lipped about last Thursday night's (August 31) crash on The Big One ride which injured eleven people and left two teenage boys in need of hospital treatment.

The Health and Safety Executive is still busy conducting investigations into the cause of the crash, which involved a moving train hitting a stationary train on Thursday morning last week.

Anthony Rodgers, 13, and Anthony Constantine, 15, who both live in Blackpool, are recovering in hospital after the former received a fractured femur and the latter, back and rib injuries in the crash.

They were cut out of the wreckage by fire crews and taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

Sarah Dornford-May, spokesman for the Pleasure Beach, said: "The second train was travelling at approximately 2-3mph and came into contact with a stopped train waiting to enter the station. The investigation is ongoing as to why the primary brake didn't operate fully. "The Health and Safety Executive is conducting a full investigation."

It is too early to tell how long the ride will be out of action for but eyewitness accounts say the carriage was badly mangled, so it could be some time before repairs are complete and the ride is given the all clear.

The Big One crash follows a spate of bad publicity for the park concerning accidents on rides. On July 21, Christopher Sherratt, 11, from Central Drive, Blackpool, was killed on the Space Invader ride.

Another incident a week later on the Derby Racer involved five riders.

Miss Dornford-May added: "Safety is our prime concern. We have been open for 104 years and millions of visitors pass through every year. Safety is our number one priority and we do everything possible to look after guests."
