THE people of Blackburn with Darwen have always been proud of their interest in the arts.
From the children competing in speech, dance and drama to the activities of more professional groups and the council have been involved in encouraging those who might not otherwise participate to enjoy such events as the Arts in the Park, the Darwen Gala, and the misnamed, but successful, Mardi Gras celebrations.
As Liberal Democrat spokesperson for both leisure and culture and social services, I am nonetheless disappointed that the grant to Blackburn with Darwen Arts Council remains the same as in the previous year, despite more groups competing for funds.
The result has been a reduction in the size of their respective grants while they have had to meet increased costs.
Another disappointing aspect has been the lack of applications for grants from disabled groups, from music therapy groups and for performers to visit residential homes and day centres.
