I NOTICED (LET, September 7) that Mellor had been granted £1,315 for a 'knees-up.' I hope they have a good time.
In Accrington, the local churches of all denominations have joined together to put on the musical 'Hopes and Dreams' next Friday and Saturday, at Oswaldtwistle Town Hall.
It's not often that the different churches work together on one project, but, as it is Christ's 2000th birthday this year, something special is needed to commemorate the occasion.
When Hyndburn Council was approached for a grant to cover some or all of the costs of putting on this production, they refused. I understand, because it was not 'millennium specific.'
I wonder if the real reason was one or more of the following:
1. It is not 'politically correct'
2. It might actually be a success (unlike the Dome)
3. Wrong religion
4. Any 'profit' will be shared between children's charities
The people involved have been working for 18 months on this production. I am sure you will join with me in wishing them the success they deserve.
