COUNTY Hall chiefs are looking at plans to install a footbridge crossing over the River Ribble at Great Mitton near Whalley.

The Hacking Ferry used to carry pedestrians across the river where it meets the Calder but has not been in operation for some time.

The aim is to improve access to the Ribble Way and encourage more walkers to the area.

The Ramblers Association has campaigned for many years for a crossing.

Several consultants have already been asked to come up with design ideas and one firm is likely to be awarded the contract in the near future.

An application for detailed planning permission is also being prepared and the whole project is being overseen by the highways section of the county council.

The planning, industrial development and tourism committee will take a close look at the scheme once detailed plans and costs have been drawn.
