THOUSANDS of people will take to the streets of Nelson at the weekend for a religious celebration.

Religious leaders and Pendle's Muslim residents will gather at the Ghausia Mosque in Nelson town centre at 11am on Sunday to mark the birthday of the Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad.

Almost 3,000 people attended the event last year and the crowds will again be monitored by the police.

A procession will leave the mosque and head across Scotland Road and through the town centre, where it will pause for readings.

It will then continue in to Stanley Street and Every Street, along Victoria Street, Lomeshaye Road, Manchester Road and back to the mosque in time for prayers at 2.30pm.

Everyone taking part will be invited to a dinner during the afternoon which will be accompanied by holy speakers before prayer begins again at 7pm.
