NEW woods in Stacksteads, Fence, Earby and Grindleton have helped towards a millennium project to plant more than 1,700 new trees in Lancashire.

Project co-ordinator of the Woodland Trust scheme, Paul Brunton, said more than 1,000 people had been involved in the project, raising more than £388,000, designing woodland and planting almost 20 acres of trees.

The new woods have been named Anne's Wood, Earby; Moss Meadow Wood, Stacksteads; Old Laund Wood, Fence and Greendale Wood at Grindleton.

Each wood is planted with a mixture of broad-leaved trees and will be protected and cared for by the Trust to enhance its recreational, wildlife and landscape value.

The project was part of the national "Woods On Your Doorstep" scheme.

Paul added: "It's extremely satisfying to know that by reaching our target here in Lancashire we have made a significant contribution to the overall success to one of the country's biggest ever tree planting challenges."
