A FAMILY centre in Nelson will celebrate its first anniversary with a party on Saturday afternoon.

The St Philip's Family Centre caters for school children before and after school hours and employs a fully-trained teacher who runs the after school Discoverers Club.

During its first year the centre has developed a series of playgroups called Little Angels and holiday clubs throughout the school holidays.

There will be a bouncy castle on Saturday, as well as puppets, games and prizes. The centre, which is based at St Philip's Church, in Leeds Road, will also hold an open day on Monday, June 4, between 11am and 6pm.

Ian Hirst, centre manager, said: "We want this to be a really fun event. More than 100 young people have passed through the Family Centre during the past year. The main purpose of the centre is to look after school-age children before and after school enabling their parents to take up full time employment.

"We would love for other people to have the confidence to come and talk to us and see if we can help them. The financial support is accessible and we are there to give the practical support."
