RETIRED teacher Councillor Dorothy Jordan gave her adopted home town top marks for effort when she spoke to accept the office of Mayor of Todmorden.

Coun Jordan, who retired three years ago from her job of teaching maths at Todmorden High School, said : "For many years the town centre has seen a slow decline but I can see Todmorden coming alive again. I know that the town has a great resource in its young people and there is a great deal of talent here."

Coun Jordan, who first moved to Todmorden in 1971 when she accepted the post of assistant director of studies at the high school, announced a special appeal was going to help Wood Bank Junior School where special facilities were needed for disabled children attending the school in Luddenden, and said her charity would be the Lady Hoare Trust for disabled children.

She invited everyone to attend the Civic Sunday service at St Mary's Church at 11am on June 17.
