Thatto Heath Crusaders 20 Featherstone Lions 12 THATTO Heath Crusaders completed a magnificent double when lifting the League Express BARLA National Cup by defeating Featherstone Lions of the National Conference Division One in the final at Spotland Stadium, Rochdale.

In front of a crowd of more than 2,000, the tone of the match was set very early on with both defences being kept very busy. Featherstone were the first to cross the line when strong running from the impressive Tuffs led to Jon Agar scoring under the sticks, which was converted by full-back Lee Senior. Within 10 minutes Senior missed a crucial penalty to the right of the sticks and Thattos Ashall opened the St Helens teams scoring on 30 minutes with a drop goal.

On 34 minutes Neil Prescott, who had been impressive in defence, linked up with Jamie Hill to send the centre in for his opening try which was converted brilliantly from the touchline by full-back Wayne Jackman. Jackman increased Thattos lead just before half-time with a penalty goal.

Thatto opened the second-half scoring with a drop goal by Darren Harris. On 54 minutes Harris was again involved, having collected a fumble ball he moved the ball to Woods who raced 70 yards to touch down. The conversion was missed by Jackman.

Victory was secured in the 71st minute when centre Jamie Hill intercepted a pass by Tuffs in his own half and raced in under the sticks for a crucial try which was converted by Jackman. The day's scoring was ended when Featherstone substitute Raybold went through a tired Thatto defence for a try converted by Senior.

It is difficult to single out any one player for mention as there were strong performances throughout the team which has been the key to Heath's success this season.

Members of the press awarded the Tom Keavney Memorial Sword for man of the match to Darren Mitchell, who once again was outstanding in both defence and attack.

Heath's victory secured them the double, having already collected the National Conference Division Two title, so completing one of their most successful seasons since they were founded. The club would like to congratulate and thank everybody who has taken part in the success this year including players, officials, fans and sponsors. The club would like especially to thank head coach Steve Peters and wish him well for the future.
