LANCASTER University's vice chancellor, Professor Wiliam Ritchie, is to retire next year.
The University's top boss will quit next September after seven years in charge at Bailrigg.
He faced a financial crisis during his early years in charge, but has seen the institution maintain high placings in most university league tables.
