CAMPAIGNERS bidding to put a stop to speeding traffic in a residential area have enlisted the support of election candidates in their fight.

Members of the East Sutton Residents Association have organised a series of road blockades in recent weeks in their campaign for speed restrictions and speed bumps to be introduced along Mill Lane and Leach Lane.

They say speeding lorries and cars are putting lives at risk -- particulalrly those of pupils at the nearby Sherdley Primary School.

Now, Brian Spencer and Shaun Woodward, Liberal Democrat and Labour candidates respectively for St Helens South, have lent their support to the campaign by signing a petition calling for speed restrictions.

Mr Woodward said: "We cannot use problems like speeding traffic as a political football. The health and safety of children in the area is far too important and I will do everything I can to get a positive result".

Residents are also campaigning for closed circuit television cameras to be introduced outside the Sutton Park Drive shops, following a series of incidents in the area involving vandalism and drug abuse.
