MORE police are patrolling the Pennine estate in Bacup following incidents in which old cars have been driven around and then set on fire on land nearby.
Sgt Graeme Fearns said: "Cars have been abandoned on land off Pennine Road and set on fire.
"The cars are scrap vehicles which young people have either bought for small amounts or have been given.
"They ride around and take them onto the open ground and set them on fire. It is a problem which began two to three weeks ago."
He added: "We have extra patrols in the area and would like anyone with information about who is responsible to contact Crimestoppers free and anonymously on 0800 555 111."
A new aid to police are the seven CCTV cameras on the estate and adjoining areas, due to "go live" this week.
A further, separately funded, camera at St Mary's School has been further delayed because of ground conditions at the site. Alternative siting arrangements are being sought.
