THOUSANDS of National Lottery players in St Helens were denied the chance to win a fortune in a midweek draw because of a problem with an number of ticket machines in the town.

A fault with a BT communications cable, which links the network of machines resulted, in retailers being unable to issue tickets for the majority of Wednesday, May 16 and the early part of Thursday, May 17.

Staff at lottery machines in the Hardshaw centre and Asda Supermarket had to turn masses of disappointed punters away.

A spokesperson for Camelot said that it was not practice to consider postponing a draw because machines aren't working in a certain area.
